Hybrid cars are all the rage these days, and its no wonder with the high prices of gas these days. But what is the deal with hybrids? How do they save so much gas? Do they really save that much money? These are a few questions that you may have about hybrid vehicles, and for good reason. Hybrid cars are a confusing technology and all the hype surrounding them doesn’t help the situation either.

So why would you want a hybrid car? Well besides saving money on gas, they also help to cut down emissions which lead to smog. We all know that the stuff that comes out of your car’s exhaust is bad for you, so why would you want to be around that. If you drive a hybrid car, you will be helping to cut down on the total amount of pollution in the air. But for most of us it is not practical to drive a car that is not powered by gasoline. Electric cars save energy and don’t pollute, but they aren’t practical for most places. Most places don’t have charging stations and the low range of all electric cars can make ownership impossible for the average person. There are also liquid propane, natural gas and other fuels available for use in certain vehicles, but gasoline is the only fuel that is readily available on just about every major street corner in every major city. That is why hybrid vehicles are so intriguing. They can provide many of the benefits of electric cars, while allowing you to fill up at any gas station.

Hybrid cars have a normal gasoline engine along with an electric motor. Both motors work in tandem to power the car. In some conditions the gas engine can be shut off and the vehicle can be propelled completely on electricity. When the gas engine powers on, it will charge the battery for the electric motor. This allows energy that is normally lost to be stored for later use. They also capture energy from braking. These factors lead to the better gas mileage ratings for hybrid cars. And with gas costing so much these days, driving a hybrid car can end up saving you money, while being good for the environment as well.
